The Low-Carb diet is very popular. What are its advantages and disadvantages?
Read the article below before doing your choice.
What does “Low-carb” mean? It is the abbreviation of Low Carbohydrates which simply mean low in glucids (sugars). It is a question of reducing fast sugars (all sweetened products), but also the products which contain slow sugars (complex glucids) such as the bread, rice, the pastes… It is like the famous Atkins diet, developped in 1972 by the doctor of the same name. This one considered that one could eat as many greases and proteins which one wishes, because only sugar would be responsible for the overweight. And if sugar is eliminated, greases then would be automatically burned…
Do the pounds disappear?
In the facts, the Low-Carb diet has the same effect as any hypocaloric diet: if it is followed, it will reduce the consummate energy, and will allow a weight loss (grease… and water)! But the fact of eliminating sugars makes this diet very monotonous, and thus very difficult to follow on the long run. The risk is to crack and take again the lost pounds at once, even more! Moreover, this diet involves an often insufficient consumption of fruit and vegetables. And a too important heating restriction involves many side effects: nauseas, headaches, heartburn…
In practice
For really judging effectiveness of a diet, it is necessary to evaluate its results on the long run. However a diet such as Low-Carb is too much monotonous and restrictive to allow an adhesion and a durable weight loss. That was confirmed besides by a recent study, which showed that the weight losses obtained at the end of three months had great difficulty to be maintained beyond seven months….
It is necessary to leave the logic which consists to avoid a type of food considered like bad. It is not only greases and sugars which make grow bigger, but imbalances. Thus, the nutritionnists recommend that our contributions consist of 50 to 55 % of glucids, 15 % of proteins, and 30 % of lipids. Admittedly, for the moment we tend to consume more greases than necessary. The ideal diet is the one which will learn us to eating better, by restoring this balance, in particular by avoiding hidden greases and sugars.
And especially, it is important to adopt these good dietary habits definitively. Because doing a diet does not have importance if one return to an unbalanced food…. Best is to consult a nutritionnist or a dietetician, to identify the most current errors and to modify them carefully… And do not forget only the food does not do all: a little physical exercise remains essential.

The complex mechanisms within the body all play a role at reducing excess stored fat. It is true that carbohydrates must be balanced with the other nutrients. The nutritionists recommendation for maintaining the balance of nutrients (50% glucids, 15% protein and 30% lipids) I think should be ideal as glucids are normally eaten the most. Nice to read such an informative post.
